THE WILL AND THE CODICIL OF GOD
- By definition, a will is a legal document outlining how you want your assets distributed after your death, while a codicil is a supplementary document that modifies or adds to an existing will, essentially acting as an amendment to make small changes without creating an entirely new will. We can think of a codicil as a mini will that updates specific aspects of your original will. Simply put, a will is a primary document that establishes your wishes regarding your estate, while a codicil is used to make minor changes to that existing will.
- If a man dies without leaving a will, he is said to have died intestate. But if he leaves a will behind, he is called a testator.
- A testament or a will has no effect while the testator lives. It is only in force after men are dead.
- The will is often referred to as the last will or testament of the testator who wrote or left a will (Hebrews 9:11-17).
- If Christ is the mediator of the new covenant, then there must have been an old covenant (Hebrews 8:7-13). The Old Testament is the will of God, while the New Testament is His codicil (Hebrews 10:1-10). The codicil completely amends the will.
- However, note that not everything in the Old Testament has been amended or set aside by the New Testament.
- The Old Testament enfolds the New Testament while the New Testament unfolds the Old Testament. Simply put, all the essentials in the Old Testament have been fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament (Matthew 5:17-20). Jesus came to fulfill the law by completing its
purpose and bringing it to its intended goal. - What has now been set aside is tithing under the Levitical priesthood, not the Melchizedek priesthood (Hebrews 7:11-22).
