THE PURPOSE OF PARABLES
- A parable is a comparison of spiritual truths of God’ s kingdom with natural, physical things here on earth. In simple terms, parables are earthly stories with heavenly meaning, truth hidden in plain sight, waiting for the hungry to dig and excavate it.
- Jesus taught the parable of the sower in (Matthew 13), and it is called the parable of parables because it serves as the key that unlocks the understanding of every other parable of the kingdom. We must pay close attention to it.
- The use of parables was not unique to Jesus.Prophet Nathan used a parable to bring King David to repentance (2 Samuel 12:1–7), and ProphetIsaiah used a parable to illustrate God’s disappointment with Israel (Isaiah 5:1–7). What was unique with Jesus was that he took the use of parables to a whole new level.
- Scripture tells us that Jesus did not speak to the multitude without a parable, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet (Matthew 13:34–35). To his disciples, however, he explained everything plainly when they were alone (Mark 4:33–34).
